What is different about Top of the Reef Live Rock ^TM?

Top of the Reef Live Rock is not made out of a resin or concrete which limits the growth of nutrient rich organisms.  Because our live rock allows bacteria to grow throughout its structure, truly imitating natural live rock, bacteria’s are bound to flourish.  An aerobic bacterium grows more on the surface of rock where more oxygen is available.  An anaerobic bacterium grows more richly in the center of the rock feeding on the nitrates that are present in the water in less oxygen rich areas. While our live rock mimics real live rock from the oceans reef it has no negative impact on the reef. We are proud to say that we offer a product that will have a large positive impact on the world’s oceans.

Are there different types of Rocks?

We sell our rocks in many types starting with basic dry to a premium that has been cultured with copepods and the bacteria needed for the success of a beautiful marine aquarium. Most of our premium rocks have sponges, coralline algae and many other micro and macro organisms growing in and around the rocks. Our rocks are not cast in molds so all rock are unique in size as well as shape and weight. Our rocks may also be cultured by the consumer if you would prefer a more sterile rock that will give you the same benefit as live rock but with no hidden passengers as any live rock (natural or manmade) may do. You may use our live rock in a sump or the main tank as a beautiful structure that will accent the look of your tank.       

In your experience, what is the best lighting for optimal growth of beneficial algae?

Actinic Blue Bulbs with a mixture of 56k and actinic blue with 10k halide with about 12-14 hours per day is optimal.
